What You Need to Know About Off-Grid Solar

Benefits of Installing Off-Grid Solar for Your Home or Business

Installing an off-grid solar system offers long-term independence, cost control, and reliability, particularly for rural, remote, or high-demand properties. Key benefits include:

  1. Energy independence by reducing reliance on the national power grid

  2. Protection from rising electricity costs through predictable, self-generated power

  3. Lower ongoing energy expenses once the system is installed

  4. Improved property value with a future-focused energy solution in place

  5. Reduced environmental impact through clean, renewable energy generation

  6. Low maintenance requirements with modern solar and battery systems

  7. Scalable system design allowing capacity to grow as energy needs increase

  8. Stronger sustainability credentials for businesses and lifestyle properties

Off-grid solar is particularly well-suited to locations with limited, unreliable, or costly grid access, and to owners who want greater control over how their power is generated and used.

Solar System Installation

Grid-Tied Solar

A grid-connected solar system is the simplest, most cost-effective and often provides the best returns on your investment.

A grid-connected setup will utilise power generated during sunlight hours and export excess solar power to the grid.  When the sun goes down, and your solar panels are no longer generating, the system will switch back over to the grid (traditional electricity supply).

This option is best if you have reasonable daytime usage and/or can load-shift appliances to operate throughout the day, e.g., washer/dryer, hot water, swimming pool, spa pool, EV charging, etc.

Hybrid Solar

A solar hybrid, solar and battery storage system allows you to use the surplus energy your solar system generates during the day after the sun goes down, rather than exporting it back to the grid. The surplus solar energy generated but not used in the daytime is stored in batteries, which are programmed to switch on as required, so you can self-consume as much free energy as possible.

A grid-connected solar and battery storage system will automatically switch over to the electricity grid once you have discharged the solar energy from the batteries.

The hybrid system is still connected to the grid, which acts as the systems 'back up', which is a significant additional benefit in the event of an outage.

This system is best if most of your usage occurs outside sunlight hours and/or if you experience regular outages.

Off-Grid Solar

Off-Grid systems have no connection to the grid and therefore require battery storage to run appliances when solar panels aren't generating enough power due to a lack of sunlight.

If you are to go “Off-Grid”, it is vital that you fully understand your usage and appliance load to correctly size your battery storage so it lasts at least 1-2 days without recharging.  Additionally, it is recommended that this option be integrated with a backup generator to ensure you are prepared for any potential situation.

While these systems can be complex and expensive, they’re often more cost-effective than running lines to remote areas, so they're a potentially good investment for farms in more isolated locations or marine islands where connection to the national grid isn’t available or is price-inhibiting.

How To Size an Off-Grid Solar System Correctly

At PERL Electrical we start by exploring how much power you will require by identifying which household appliances you use day to day and their wattage. This is to ensure that the solar system being installed is a good fit for your residential or commercial property.

Our experienced designers will then estimate the number of sun hours your location receives in summer, as well as the number of sunshine hours during the peak of winter. Also factored in are miscellaneous considerations, such as shade, etc.

Engineers use the same information; this allows them to design a system size that provides enough power on the shortest day of winter.

Should you require it, and depending on your budget, you could increase the recommended system size for extra power, which is useful if you ever have visitors or a large family/business.

Below are examples of common system sizes and the potential power they could deliver.

Please note this is a rough guide; we recommend a system size developed to your specific requirements.

How MUCH DOES SOLAR POWER COST?

Solar power system prices are largely dependent on the system's size and the type of roof the system is installed on.  Below is a small sample of residential system sizes in New Zealand and their typical pricing.

Prices were last updated on 04/10/2022.

2 kW Five 400W panels *$7,500 inc GST, fully installed.
3 kW Eight 375W panels *$10,000 inc GST, fully installed.
4 kW Ten 400W panels *$11,600 inc GST, fully installed.
5 kW Eleven 455W panels *$13,500 inc GST, fully installed.
6 kW Sixteen 375W panels *$15,000 inc GST, fully installed
10 kW Twenty two 455W panels *$24,500 inc GST, fully installed.

*Please only use these prices as a guide.  The solar power system prices assume straightforward installation on a metal roof. Prices can vary based on a number of factors.

Solar Battery Prices

Batteries can be used to store solar power for use at night, during times of peak electricity demand and during blackouts. Learn more about solar batteries here.

Prices for a battery storage system accompanying a grid-connected solar power system will largely depend on the battery’s storage capacity, followed by the brand's reputation, quality and special features.

Generally, the more storage capacity is installed, the more expensive it is.  Find out if solar batteries are worth the cost or see the approximate prices for lithium-ion solar batteries.

5 kWh $6,000 to $7,500
10 kWh $10,000 to $13,000
15 kWh $14,000 to $18,000

Note: All prices include GST
