Grid-Tied System

A grid-connected solar power system is the simplest, most cost effective and often provides the best returns on your investment.

A grid-connected solar power system will utilise your generated solar power during sunlight hours and export excess solar power to the grid.  When the sun goes down and your solar panels are no longer generating the system will switch back over to the grid (traditional electricity supply).

This system is best if you have reasonable day time usage and / or able to load shift appliances to operate throughout the day i.e. washer / dryer, hot water, swimming pool, spa pool, EV charges etc.

Hybrid System

Put into simple terms, a solar hybrid, solar and battery storage system allows you to use the surplus energy that your solar system creates during the day for use after the sun goes down rather than exporting your excess power back to the grid. The surplus solar energy generated but not used in the daytime is stored in batteries which are programmed to switch on as required so you can self-consume as much free energy as possible.

A grid connected solar and battery storage system will automatically switch over to the electricity grid once you have discharged the solar energy from the batteries.

The hybrid system is still connected to the grid which acts as the systems 'back up' which is a significant additional benefit is back up power in event of a power outage.

This system is best if the majority of your power usage is outside of sunlight hours and/or you experience regular power outages.

Off-Grid System

Off-Grid systems have no connection to the grid and therefore require battery storage to power appliances when solar panels aren't generating enough power due to a lack of sun light.

If you are to go "Off-Grid" it is vital that you fully understand your power usage and appliance load to correctly size your battery storage to last at least 1 - 2 days without recharging.  Additionally it is recommended that the system is integrated with a back-up generator to ensure that you are prepared for all potential situations.

While these systems can be complex and expensive, often, they're more cost effective than running power lines to remote areas so are a potentially a good investment for farms in more isolated locations or marine islands where connection to the national grid isn't available or is price inhibitive.

How To Size an Off-Grid Solar Power System Correctly?

PERL Electrical Solar power designers require detailed information about your daily power use. This is to ensure that the solar power system being installed will be right the fit for your home or business.

They need to know all of the appliances in the household that will be running from day to day, and the wattage of each appliance.

Our PERL Electrical Solar Power designers estimate the sun hours your location will receive in summer, along with the sunshine hours during the peak of winter. Also factored in are miscellaneous considerations, such as shade etc.

Engineers use the same information; this allows them to design a system size that will give you enough power for the shortest day of winter.

Should you require it, and depending on your budget, you could increase the recommended system size to have extra power; useful if you ever have visitors or a large family/business.

Below are examples of common system sizes, and what they could potentially power.

Please note this is a rough guide, we recommend a system size developed to your specific power requirements.

How MUCH DOES SOLAR POWER COST?

Solar power system prices are largely dependent on the system's size and the type of roof the system is installed on.  Below is a small sample of residential system sizes in New Zealand and their typical pricing.

Prices were last updated on 04/10/2022.

2 kW Five 400W panels *$7,500 inc GST, fully installed.
3 kW Eight 375W panels *$10,000 inc GST, fully installed.
4 kW Ten 400W panels *$11,600 inc GST, fully installed.
5 kW Eleven 455W panels *$13,500 inc GST, fully installed.
6 kW Sixteen 375W panels *$15,000 inc GST, fully installed
10 kW Twenty two 455W panels *$24,500 inc GST, fully installed.

*Please only use these prices as a guide.  The solar power system prices assume straightforward installation on a metal roof. Prices can vary based on a number of factors.

Solar Battery Prices

Batteries can be used to store solar power for use at night, during times of peak electricity demand and during blackouts. Learn more about solar batteries here.

Prices for a battery storage system accompanying a grid-connected solar power system will largely depend on the battery's storage capacity, followed by the brand's reputation, quality and special features.

Generally, the more storage capacity is installed, the more expensive it is.  Find out if solar batteries are worth the cost or see the approximate prices for lithium-ion solar batteries.

5 kWh $6,000 to $7,500
10 kWh $10,000 to $13,000
15 kWh $14,000 to $18,000

Note: All prices include GST
