HEAT PUMP SIZE GUIDE

It’s important to get the right sized heat pump for the area you are intending to heat or cool to maintain efficiency and the longevity of your heat pump.

Oversized
If the heat pump capacity is too big for the space requiring heating or cooling, it will repeatedly cycle on and off, as it quickly reaches the target temperature, which is not only inefficient but also reduces the lifespan of the unit.

Undersized
If the heat pump capacity is too small, the unit will run constantly as it attempts to reach the set temperature point, which in turn reduces the external coil temperature and causes regular defrosting.

Heat pump sizing calculations that must be taken into consideration:

  • region, location and orientation of the building
  • specific local conditions
  • orientation of windows
  • seasonal high and low ambient temperatures
  • insulation level
  • number of occupants and their activity levels
  • solar gain
  • Ducted heat pump systems require careful design. Overlong and/or ducts that have lots of bends or travel through uninsulated spaces can have heating energy loss of more than 30%. Ducted systems also higher than necessary pressure, which can cause duct leakage.

HEAT PUMP SERVICING & MAINTENANCE

Just like your car, all Heat Pumps & Air Conditioners need regular maintenance to ensure their longevity.  It is also recommended that the residential units in your home or rental property have a full service carried out every 12 months.

Commercial Air Conditioning systems on the other hand are recommended to have a full service every 3 to 6 months, as these units are often used on a daily basis & so require more attention.  Also depending on the environment (dirt & dust) in which they are operating will determine the frequency.

PERL Electrical recommends that filters are cleaned every three months which can be easily done by the owner.  Alternatively PERL Electrical can send a technician who will undertake a full heat pump service.

A FULL PERL Electrical Heat Pump service includes:

  • Clean & disinfecting the indoor unit to prevent bacteria build up on the coil and throughout the unit
  • Application of anti-microbial tablet treatment in condensate drip tray to inhibit bacterial growth within the indoor unit
  • Clean the indoor unit’s filters, vanes and outer covers
  • Check the condensate drain, flushing with disinfectant and unblock if required
  • Check electrical terminals and components for signs of soot
  • Run the unit in both heating and cooling mode to check air-out temperatures
  • Check the outdoor unit base and ensure the unit is level and secure
  • Check for obstructions in and around the unit, coil, drain and electronics to improve efficiency and performance
  • Check flare joints and fittings
  • Tighten valve caps, check electrical connections
  • Check and clear coil
  • Check refrigerant pressures are satisfactory on both heating & cooling
  • Clean the outside of the casing
  • Inspect for presence of insects and vermin in case of damage to the electronics

Our technicians work throughout the wider New Zealand and will contact our existing customers when their service is due.
