Check out the following steps to begin to find the best ventilation system for your home:

    1. Ensure heating and insulation: Before considering a ventilation system, make sure your home has proper floor and ceiling insulation, if possible. Additionally, ensure you have a reliable heat source in your living areas, such as a heat pump or wood burner.  PERL Electrical supply and install a large arrange of heat pumps and ducted systems.  Checkout our Heat Pump Page for more information and our current Heat Pump Promotional Offers.
    1. Address moisture issues: Identify any sources of airborne moisture, particularly in areas like bathrooms. Install a shower dome or extractor fan to reduce moisture buildup. Consider using a plastic moisture control sheet to prevent rising damp, and check for any water pooling under the home due to blocked drains.
    1. Assess the need for a dedicated ventilation system: If you're still experiencing ventilation problems after addressing moisture issues, you can consider a mechanical ventilation system. Alternatively, a dehumidifier can serve as a temporary solution, but it may be more expensive to run compared to a ventilation system.
    1. Choose between positive pressure and balanced pressure systems: When looking at ventilation systems, determine whether a positive pressure or balanced pressure system would be more suitable for your home. Positive pressure systems blow drier air into the house from the roof space or outside. They are better suited for older houses with wooden joinery and may require additional vents or open windows in modern, sealed houses. Balanced pressure systems on the other hand, extract warm, damp air from living spaces, pass it through a heat exchanger, and bring in dry air from outside. They work well in modern, well-sealed homes and don't have the unintended cooling effect of positive pressure systems.
    1. Consider filters: Ventilation systems typically have filters to clean the incoming air. Different filters are designated by letters and numbers (e.g., G4, F7). "F" filters remove smaller particles than "G" filters, effectively catching more dust and airborne bacteria. Higher second numbers indicate more effective filters. If necessary, optional advanced filters like carbon filters for odour removal or HEPA filters for allergen removal can be added. It's recommended to start with a standard filter and only upgrade to carbon or HEPA filters if odour or allergy issues are present in the household.
    1. Evaluate optional features: Some ventilation systems offer optional features like adding heaters to the ducting, which can be beneficial for positive pressure systems concerned about cool air reducing indoor temperatures. Summer cooling options, where the system introduces cooler air to the home, are also available but may come at an additional cost.

By following these steps, reading our FAQ and exploring our preferred ventilation suppliers links below: SmartVent, EVOAQ, Weiss and BDV Air and talking to your local PERL Electrician you will find the best solution for your home's ventilation needs.
