Choose cabling for performance and future capacity

Copper structured cabling remains the standard choice for most office workstation connections. The appropriate category depends on network performance needs, cable run lengths, active equipment and the expected life of the fit-out. Higher-category cabling can support greater performance and may provide more headroom for future upgrades, but it is not automatically the right choice for every area of every business.

Fibre optic cabling may be suitable between floors, buildings or communications rooms, particularly where longer distances or higher capacity are required. It is often an effective choice for larger commercial premises, warehouses with attached offices, campuses and sites with several separate work areas.

The system should be designed as a whole. High-specification cable will not deliver its intended performance if the outlets, patch panels, terminations and testing are inconsistent. Likewise, a fast internet connection cannot compensate for poor internal cabling, congested routes or a poorly located wireless access point.

Slow internet is not always an internet-provider problem. If connections drop in certain rooms, video calls struggle in meeting spaces, staff rely on temporary cables, or the comms cabinet has become difficult to identify and manage, the internal network may need attention.

Other warning signs include old or damaged outlets, insufficient data points, exposed leads creating trip hazards, repeated changes made without documentation, and office expansion that has outgrown the original layout. A review can identify whether the answer is a targeted extension, recabling of key areas or a more comprehensive upgrade.

It is often possible to improve an existing office without replacing every cable. Reusing suitable pathways or retaining serviceable sections can control costs. However, where cabling is outdated, poorly documented or inaccessible, a partial solution can sometimes defer rather than solve the problem.
