How to Install Security Lighting at Home Safely

A security light that comes on after someone has reached your front door is too late. Effective lighting starts before a person reaches the house, shed, loading area or vehicle, making access visible and discouraging unwanted activity without turning your property into a floodlit site.
Knowing how to install security lighting begins with choosing the right locations and lighting controls. The final electrical connection, however, is not a job to rush. Fixed wiring work must be completed safely and in line with New Zealand electrical requirements by a suitably licensed electrician.
Start with the areas that need light
Walk around the property after dark before choosing fittings. What looks like an obvious location in daylight can create glare, leave a blind spot or point light directly into a neighbour’s window at night. Take note of gates, side passages, driveways, rear doors, garages, bins, workshops, storage yards and routes between buildings.
For homes, the highest-priority areas are usually entry doors, side access and the driveway. Landlords and property managers should also consider shared paths, letterboxes, rubbish areas and parking. On commercial, industrial and rural sites, security lighting often needs to cover larger zones such as loading bays, staff entrances, machinery sheds, farm gates and building perimeters.
The goal is not simply more light. It is useful, directed light where people need to see, cameras need a clear image, and intruders are less able to approach unnoticed.
Choose the right type of security light
LED floodlights are the common choice for broad outdoor coverage. They use relatively little power, provide instant light and generally have a long service life. A compact LED fitting can suit a doorway or narrow path, while a wider-beam floodlight may be better for a driveway, car park or yard.
Motion-sensor lights are practical where constant lighting is unnecessary. They reduce energy use and draw attention to movement, but they need careful positioning and adjustment. A sensor facing the street may be triggered repeatedly by passing traffic, pedestrians, pets or moving trees. In a busy location, dusk-to-dawn lighting or a timed control may be more reliable.
Some properties benefit from combining both approaches. Low-level, always-on lighting can make a path or entrance safer, while sensor-controlled floodlights cover larger access points. Where CCTV is installed, avoid relying only on sudden bright light. Cameras generally perform best when an area has even, consistent illumination rather than harsh light beside deep shadows.
Solar security lights can be useful at a remote gate, fence line or shed where trenching a cable would be impractical. Their performance depends on panel location, winter sunlight, battery capacity and the amount of nightly use. They are not always the best choice for a high-risk entry point that requires dependable all-night coverage.
Plan placement before any electrical work
Mounting height affects both coverage and comfort. A fitting installed too low can be easy to tamper with and may shine into people’s eyes. One installed too high may leave poor coverage directly below it. For many residential applications, a position around 2.5 to 3 metres above ground gives a workable balance, although the correct height depends on the fitting’s beam angle and the space being covered.
Aim light downward and across an area rather than straight out. This reduces glare, keeps more of the light on your property and helps avoid light spill into neighbouring homes. At a driveway, for example, position the fitting to illuminate the approach and vehicle area without sending a bright beam towards the road.
Consider the physical mounting surface as well. Brick, concrete, weatherboard, steel cladding and timber all require the right fixings. The fitting needs a solid base that can carry its weight and resist wind, vibration and weather. Outdoor cables and connections must be protected from physical damage, moisture and UV exposure.
Before work begins, decide whether the light will operate from a sensor, a wall switch, a timer, a photocell or a combination of controls. A manual override is often worthwhile. It allows you to keep a light on when arriving home late, checking an unusual noise or working outside, without changing the sensor settings.
How to install security lighting safely
The installation process is more than fixing a light to the wall and connecting a cable. A professional installation starts by confirming the existing circuit can support the new load and that the supply, protective devices and earthing arrangements are suitable. While LED fittings draw less power than older halogen floodlights, every addition to an electrical installation still needs proper assessment.
Your electrician will isolate the relevant circuit, mount the fitting securely, run suitable cable in an appropriate route and make weatherproof connections. They will also ensure the fitting has the right ingress protection rating for its location. A light under a well-protected eave faces different exposure from one mounted on an open gatepost or exterior wall in driving rain.
The work should then be tested before the installation is placed into service. This confirms the light operates correctly and helps identify issues such as incorrect sensor wiring, inadequate earthing, damaged cable or a fault in the existing circuit. Electrical safety is particularly important outdoors, where water, metal cladding, garden equipment and exposed surfaces can increase risk.
Do not connect a hard-wired exterior light to an existing circuit yourself unless you are authorised and competent to carry out that work. Temporary plug-in lighting and solar products may suit some simple applications, but permanent security lighting deserves a compliant installation that will remain dependable in all weather.
Set up the sensor for the property, not the box
Once the fitting is installed, sensor adjustment determines whether it is helpful or frustrating. Most motion sensors allow you to set sensitivity, detection range, operating time and daylight level. Start with a conservative range and sensitivity, then test it at night by walking through the intended detection zone.
Set the sensor so a person approaching the door, gate or driveway activates it early enough to be useful. Then check that a car travelling along the road, a neighbour using their path or a swaying branch does not trigger it. Small adjustments to the sensor direction can make a significant difference.
The timer should suit the location. A front entrance may only need one or two minutes of light after movement. A rear yard, commercial loading area or rural shed may require longer. Leaving a bright floodlight on for excessive periods can annoy neighbours, increase running costs and reduce the impact of a genuine activation.
Seasonal changes matter too. Bush growth can enter the detection zone, winter darkness arrives earlier, and insects may gather around bright fittings. Review the settings a few weeks after installation rather than assuming the initial setup will remain ideal all year.
Avoid common security lighting mistakes
The most common mistake is choosing a fitting based on brightness alone. More lumens are useful for a large open yard, but a powerful floodlight can be uncomfortable and ineffective in a small courtyard. Beam spread, mounting height and direction are just as important as output.
Another issue is placing one light at the obvious front entry and overlooking side access. Many properties have gates, narrow paths or rear doors that are less visible from the street. A layered lighting plan is often more effective than one oversized fitting.
Poorly managed glare is also a security problem. It can make it harder for residents, visitors and cameras to see beyond the bright source. Shielded, downward-facing fittings give a clearer view of the surrounding area and are more considerate of nearby properties.
Finally, security lighting should support other sensible measures, not replace them. Good locks, secure gates, visible house numbers, maintained landscaping and correctly positioned cameras all work better when the site is properly lit.

A straightforward light replacement may be simple for an electrician, but new installations can involve cable routes, switchboard capacity, underground wiring, multiple buildings or integration with cameras and access control.
